Interventional spine medicine is an innovative approach to treating back pain. Using a holistic approach, the medical team—which could be made up of a spinal surgeon such as myself, a physical therapist, a pain management specialist, and a psychologist—will work together to determine the best course of treatment. The goal is to improve the patient’s overall well-being by working synergistically with other medical disciplines. For example, alleviating a patient’s back pain with an injection may allow for participation in physical therapy, which will continue to further strengthen the back and spine. To incorporate the mind-body connection into the healing process, a patient could meet with a psychologist to address how their chronic pain has had a significant emotional impact.
